I wish this book had been available two years ago, before I became totally immersed in my father's healthcare and financial wellbeing. It would have helped prepare me for what was to come. On the other hand, even though I learned the hard way much of what Gross writes about, it is still comforting to be reminded that I am not alone; a rapidly growing army of us is going through the same thing.Sverigehttp://tearingdownvsbuildingup.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9088149486562150260.post-80167150670494370312012-06-01T03:47:27.849-05:002012-06-01T03:47:27.849-05:00The book is for everyone who has parents or is a p...The book is for everyone who has parents or is a parent. It's about how families can take care of aging parents and how we can arrange ourselves so that our children need to care for us as little as possible. It's part memoir, part how-to, part policy analysis. The author worked for the New York Times for 30 years and has been nominated for 13 Pulitzer Prizes. Her expertise as an investigative journalist is in health and aging. Therefore, the fact that even she was ill-equipped to care for her aging, ailing mother was a huge wake-up call to her and she wrote this book to help the rest of us.
As I was reading it, I kept finding myself wanting to immediately email various friends the news that I'd found a book that provided answers to the very same issues with which they were currently struggling. Share the book with your parents or kids, too - it will be the starter to the conversation that's been too tough to have. I've shared it with my family - I don't want to be the only one in this situation equipped with the crucial information and insights.
Jane's tone is that of a wise, witty, warm, humble friend who happens to be an expert. You'll laugh and cry. It's not a bleak or dry read. It is, however, a must-read, in my opinion. Why reinvent the wheel at the expense of you, your parents', your kids' health, finances, and well-being? Just read this book.Luxembourghttp://appreciatelifevenmore.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9088149486562150260.post-26411080489523405552011-04-13T14:23:21.156-05:002011-04-13T14:23:21.156-05:00Wow, that's convincing. For other writers, it's best to put it down on paper so as to see it more objectively; even when down on paper, it's still at the back of the mind, and there it can morph into something else.Astrapohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04482864910305152475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9088149486562150260.post-72524318073870013452010-01-26T01:41:38.723-06:002010-01-26T01:41:38.723-06:00I'm rooting for you. And I do "get" the exiles- people who are just miserable in the confines of a corporate/office environment, and have to find places to make a living where they can have at least some sort of sense of movement and freedom; where they don't have to put on a shirt and tie and sit like a school boy for 8 hours.

I am like that, and I think lots of other ex-theatre types are that way, too. Hence the temp jobs, and lack of long-term employment history for me!
